Roswell sheep

July 23, 2007

A friend sent me this…

Many will recall that on July 8, 1947, witnesses claimed that an unidentified object with five aliens aboard crashed onto a sheep and cattle ranch just outside Roswell , New Mexico . This is a well-known incident that many say has long been covered up by the U.S. Air Force and the Federal government.

However, what you may NOT know is that in the month of March, 1948, exactly nine months after that historic day, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfield, Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Condolezza Rice, and Dan Quyale were all born.

This is what happens when aliens breed with sheep. This piece of information may clear up a lot of things.

Funnily enough, it does.

Reddit pointed me to this article on Reason Online. Set in Douala , southwestern Cameroon, ittells of the experiences of Tim Harford, musing about possible reasons poor countries like that are, and stay, poor. Larded with ad-hoc reflections and opinions from people he meets on a short trip from the airport. Interesting read.

Interesting interview with James Shikwati in der Spiegel, underlining what I assume we’re all suspecting; giving money, food and clothing to Africa does not help. In fact, if anything it creates corruption, a beggar mentality and even destroys the market for local farmers, clothes makers and other small industries. Read the rest of this entry »

Just back from Kisii where we’re all geared up to start our second service centre. Peter, David and Kennedy are doing a great job setting up their new office. Once again helped by kindred spirits, the brothers from Cardinal Ortunga High School helping us out with secure office and living space on their compound, the first 8 schools have, or are now, being assisted with a computer class-room. Goodbye web-space

May 16, 2007

PHP webhostingMy account at PHPwebhosting closed today, marking the end of an era. Out of all the hosting companies I’ve tried over the years, they stick out as the best, most reliable and most flexible one out there. You pay them a fixed amount of $9.95 per month, for which you get unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited pop3 email boxes,MySQL, multiple domains, you name it. Unlimited being ‘fair sharing of resource’ in reality but not once I’ve asked them for more disk space or for some feature to be switched on to negative response. Good technical support, excellent up-time, very flexible in the solution of any problem, even if it’s about the monthly bill.

Nick, Carl, colleages, thanks for your support over the years and may business flourish!

Fresh start

The old place was getting a big dusty, as things tend to do here if they are not hosed down once every so often. So the old me would have carefully selected the best framework for a website installed every single web logging tool available, played around with it, copied and pasted created an original new layout, in short, the old me would have been nerding away happily for weeks on end. New Me (Patent Pending) has no time for that kind of nonsense. New Me is trying to read his email without having someone switching off the power to my pc. Distracting me whilst his brother presses the [esc] key. Read the rest of this entry »
